Help with paint colour please

We have a cream kitchen with grey stone floor tiles and boring cream splash back tiles. the room is quite light with large windows and I wanted to put a strong colour on the walls. Dp has vetoed my suggestions so far - duck egg blue, olive green or teal. He wants red or yellow. I am the one doing the work and I refuse to paint it red. I'm really not sure about yellow.... So I was wondering whether we might compromise on a kind of "retro" yellow or mustard. Can anyone suggest something that might fit the bill or give any other suggestions?

I love yellow but can't see it working particularly well with cream - mustard/ochre at a push. A berry-ish red/wine might look better but, to be honest, I prefer your choices

I know he wants yellow or red but I agree with you to want greenish colour

We are probably doing ours Willow Tree dulux kitchen version also have cream colour tiles

Have to differ here, I think yellow would look great and sunshiny. I love red but it might look a bit dark.

How about a pale lemony yellow? I could see that working without being an assault on the eyes. You could use a stronger colour in one area or on one wall and accessorise in that colour to pull it all together.

DP's choices are either very boring conservative or just terrible! I usually do what I think. Then he tells me I was right after all.

Yes to mustard or better with cream I think 'Cumin' would go, a nice Habitat colour.

Well thank you all. Good to know I am correct! I do like "cumin" so will get a tester to see if it works in the kitchen. We argue about many aspects of home decor which is probably why we still have an awful lot of decorating to do. Sigh

Yellow or red pain with a cream kitchen and a grey floor sounds bloody awful. Overrule him. Your suggestion of olive green or teal (or I would go with a deep smokey blue) is much better.

I know TippyTappy. But he claims those colours are "cold".

A very deep claret red might be okay but yellow would be awful. How dark is the grey floor?

If you paint it duck egg blue it will look fab with red accessories/accents. Just google-images "duck egg blue red"

DH is a bit like this and that's why his study is bright yellow. He always thinks my paint choices are wishy washy until they are on the wall.

I think he may have trouble visualising the end result, sounds like he has a simple view of colours. Would it help to do a bit of a Pinterest board to show how it might look? The photo is from this site btw

Teal might also look lovely with red accents. I love red too but it's too much for walls - I think it has to be the secondary or accent colour.

Also if you download the app for dulux onto your mobile or iPad you can take a photo of the kitchen and then change the paint colours in the photo so you get to see what it will look like red yellow blue or green

But seriously, does he have an idea of how things might go together? Is he partially colour blind (serious question)!

Olive green with orange and mustard accessories? This is a bedroom but will give you an idea...

I think it depends how warm (in colour) your grey tiles and cream are.
As long as the greens and blues have a warm undertone it won't be cool.
But if your current colours are cool, putting a hot red will just look odd.
Also is the room north or south facing, you say it's light, but is it a warm or cool light?
Tonal is always easier to do than contrast.
You could introduce some coloured tea towels, kettle, toaster etc to test it out for your dh.

It's south-west facing and gets a lot of sun at the end of the day.

I think the dulux app sounds like a good way to show him some examples.

I've just looked up Willow Tree RtKangamummy - really nice. I don't think DP will go for it though.
