Has anyone converted a chalet style bungalow?

I've seen a house in very interested in, but the current setup is smaller than ideal.

Has anyone successfully changed the design of their chalet bungalow? Ideally, I'd like to make the house a regular square box and extend out the back of the house.

I turned a bungalow into a chalet - extending upwards to the back and to the side.

You can do a "roof lift" - this is where the whole upstairs is built off site (including bathrooms fitted etc and then your existing roof taken off and this craned on...seen it on Sarah Beeny ... see link below. I had a quote for a 5 bed 2 bath my footprint is 70ft x 30ft at £120k which I thought was reasonable - it looks quick and painless - famous last words!

I've just moved into a five bedroom house that was originally a two bed bungalow! Everyone is stunned when we tell them. Roof taken off and rooms added upstairs and big extension on the back that houses the kitchen diner and family room.

Thank you so much, you've given me hope. The ground floor space is only 90m2 and would hope to increase overall to around 200m2. But there's no access to the back garden except for narrow side walkways. I

I don't see how machinery would get through.

We have just finished a thirties bungalow adding a side extension, knocking walls down to create a larege open ish plan L shaped kitchen depriving room it's got a lovely wide hall and then three bedrooms on the other side of the hall. It's gorgeous but only room for one bathroom. Moving the kitchen right across the house was expensive but transformed the living space.

Dining room!!! I never deprive myself especially in the dining room

We looked at doing this but it was far more expensive than just extending the chalet bungalow.

Thank you all. I would like to move the kitchen to the other side of the house too.

Now just waiting for a builder to advise if it's even a possibility without rear access.

If it's one of a road full of bungalows, check local council website for plans of work already done

Unfortunately not, have already checked, mostly conservatories being added.

My dh is very handy and my Soninlaw is a builder so my costs were lowish. Electric drains and plumbing had to moved across the bungalow a new door put in and window remade smaller. Then you have to strip all the plumbing electrics etc out of the old kitchen we have just about finished and it looks great added about 100k to the value too.
