Removing sticky tile adhesive

We have horrible self adhesive vinyl (not cushion - the stuff that's more like Lino) tiles, on top of the original 1930s quarry tiles which we'd like to uncover. We can easily get the tiles off with a heat gun, but is there anything that will remove the sticky stuff that's left without damaging the quarry tiles or the grout in between them? We've been told it's likely the tiles are the damp proof course too so we have to be careful not to destroy that!

Not sure - I'd check with a tile company before trying anything. Although, I've just lifted a lino floor which was installed on top of very old plasticky type tiles and I'm using white spirit to remove the disgusting stuff. It's working quite well at the moment - that might work if you can spot test somewhere.

Try Goo Gone.......have a look on Amazon. it's fab stuff but you'll need to check on a small patch first. It's amazing for getting sticky label residue off things so could be worth a shot.

FishOn Yes, it does. I tried that before using white spirit, but the smell was more difficult to remove and it was quite an expensive solution! It's ok for small things but for a large area, it gets right up yer nose!!

Useful thread as I have just bought a property which has vinyl floor tiles stuck up the walls and on kitchen work surfaces as well as on the floor!

Redhound Oooer, sounds lovely . I'm not sure what substance would work to fetch sticky stuff off a rough surface though? If something has been stuck to a smooth surface like tiles then easy, but if the tiles are stuck to plaster or concrete then you'll likely need something else (like a chisel and/or replastering!). Have fun - I've got this to come with a new purchase !
