Anyone extended and put the utility at the back/garden?

We are struggling to reconfigure our house. We want to incorporate a utility room and I think it could go in the back corner of the extension. I'm hunting on Pinterest for inspiration but can't find any photos of utilities being that far back.

If any of you have a utility room at the back would you send me a photo pretty please?

All the utilities I have seen at the back of the house tend to spoil the kitchen and view. The best plan is to put them at the other end between the hall and kitchen. Then you can put windows out to the garden.

I am assuming you are extending a house that has the kitchen at the back.

All the terraced houses round here (including ours) were extended a long time ago and have the utility room & cloakroom at the far end of the extension. Personally, I hate it because it means there's no direct garden view from the kitchen.

We have an outhouse at the back of the garden that houses our washing machine and dryer. It's not the prettiest building though...

Thank you. We are semi-detached and double-fronted so the back is wide enough that a utility room wouldn't obstruct the complete view. I'm toying with having it against the shared wall with the neighbours (back right looking out to the garden) and having the kitchen moved to be where the existing dining room is (middle right).

The other alternative is to put the utility room middle left (against the exterior wall) but this means losing lots of lovely light from the south facing windows.....

The only concern if you're going to put it on the adjoining wall is that the drains / plumbing would presumably need to go under the floor to the back of the house if you had washer etc on the shared wall, or you'd have to place them on the back wall so they're next to an external wall? Is that feasible?

We put the utility room at the back of the kitchen extension we built at our last house. It was an attached, thatched non-listed Georgian village house. We still had a great view from the kitchen (double height windows), but with the benefit of hindsight I'd put it in a different location if doing it again. Our architect was a bit crap, TBH

In the attached pic (which is rather rubbish as was taken before we relandscaped the upper terrace part of the garden), the door to the utility is on the left, between the two prints. I'll see if I can dig out any other pics, although I'm pretty sure I don't have one of the utility itself.....

Ok, so here's a couple showing the outside and the only one I could find (apart from a close-up of the gothic style loo we installed ) of the utility itself.....

The downside for me was that we didn't have a back door leading straight from kitchen to garden - you had to go through the ultility (and past that gothic loo!) to get outside. Alternatively you had to walk all the way round to the other end of the house to go out through the French Windows that were in the 80s annex added by a PO that we reconfigured into an extra sitting room.

If I was building now I would find a way to put a door directly into the garden within the kitchen!

So I think the width of the back is approximately 30ft so we can afford to lose some to a utility room. I'd like a single door out to the garden from the utility room and then bifolds/sliding across the back of the living area...

DH not keen overall on the idea of this layout in proposing and wants to stick with the architect's original suggestion.

Need to scour Pinterest for more kitchens which are set back....
