buying and converting a barn

Grateful for your views on buying an old barn and converting it to a house? Do locals/councils mind converting unused barns to something that'll get some use?

Depends on the barn, depends on the council, depends on the village.

I wanted to convert an barn that had been a cow Byre into a vets surgery was turned down as it was not close enough to it's original use!!! And not a broad enough cross section of the community would get to use it!!!! It's still unconverted and empty eight years later.
