Reasonable quote from locksmith?

Evening all, we've just moved into a new house, and need four locks changing.

We've gone for high security locks (coded and dimpled keys, will only be able to get another key cut by contacting lock company and providing our signatures etc). Also one key will open all four locks for our own convenience. Lastly we will have key and turn cylinders, so you'll need a key to open from outside but only need to turn the key fob from the inside to exit.

We've been quoted £279, does that sound about right?

You can do it yourself really easily, I did with no help at all, just a Phillips screwdriver. It took less than 15 minutes.

Just as you have, the ABS Avocet ones, all locks identical and 14 keys which fit any door, cost less than £200. BUT be careful, we went for ones that need a key on both sides, lots of insurance companies won't cover you if you can turn a fob on the inside. When you order them online lots of warnings come up if you put them in your basket.

in some cases (especially flats where you can't get out of a back door or window) the rule for deadlocks that need a key is relaxed, so you can always get out of the front door e.g. in a fire.

Also used for Escape Locks.

My own preference is for a deadlocking latch, so it locks when you shut the door, always needs a key from outside, can be opened by handle from inside, but can be deadlocked to stop the handle working e.g. when the building is empty. However the only ones I know like that on the market that meet BS3621 are rimlocks.

The insurers will ask if your locks meet their "minimum standards" leaflet. If you say no they may still offer cover.

BTW I strongly agree with having locks suited; you only need one key and people are more likely to carry and use it.

Thanks everyone, I spoke with my insurer to confirm the key and turn lock would be OK, they were happy as long as it conforms to British standard. My locksmith has said they do. I'm not having that on my front door as there's a letterbox so unless I caged it someone could in theory open our door by putting their hand in.
