Moving House and laying carpets

We are due to move house in a few weeks time and we want to lay a carpet upstairs in the bedrooms, on the landing plus a stair runner. There are currently only floorboards there. Can anyone suggest how best to manage to timing of this...?!
Am wondering whether we should already get this booked to happen the day after the move, before we start unpacking boxes to fill the wardrobes etc? But will having the Super Kingsize bed & mattress already in be a problem, or should we keep the main bedroom empty..?
(Or should we just unpack as normal, book them for a week later and assume the carpet-layers are used to moving furniture around etc...?)
Any advice appreciated, thanks.

get the bedrooms done on the day (ideally the morning) and then the stairs and landing after you are in. If it's raining the lovely new carpet on the stairs and landing will get b*ggered even with dust sheets down. Can you request your solicitor for an early transfer? We got everything in place the day before and had our keys by 11am. Carpet guys could do upstairs whilst everything being moved into the downstairs so make sure you are clear with them that the bedrooms stuff gets loaded first and that they load the truck accordingly so that the downstairs stuff (including garden stuff) is last on, first off! That gives the fitters best change to get underlay and carpet down. Just been through similar but we didn't actually move on carpet fitting day.

have you exchanged contracts?

I wouldn't bank on early access, even if you are first in the chain.

langlandgirl · 21/02/2016 20:38

yes, sorry - we weren't in a chain at either end - i guess that did make it easier. You may still get away with it. Maybe check with fitter how long a room of the dimensions you are looking at would take to fit before trying to work out which way to go?

We are in a chain and I don't think we will have early access - it never actually occurred to me to try and do it on the same day, but that is probably the best idea! So thank you :)

I couldn't imagine much worse than worrying about getting carpets fitted on top of everything else on moving day. If you have the measurements, book them to come the day after before you've unpacked everything.

Also bear in mind that some places charge you extra if they need to move the furniture.

Leave a room completely clear and then move things around after the carpet has been fitted. Fitters can work around a bed and an empty wardrobe.

Personally, I would book them to be laid before you put all the furniture in... no point in moving it twice? Get them in there the morning you get the keys.. that way you're all done!

wowfudge · 23/02/2016 17:50

But you won't necessarily get the keys until the afternoon!

The last two times I have moved I've got the keys after 5pm...
