Tall kitchen corner units - any opinions?

Hi,

One of the designs we have for our kitchen uses a tall corner unit, like this

Does anyone have any opinions on this type of unit? Having one suits our preferred layout, but a kitchen suppliers that does not produce them has told us they are a really bad idea.

Why do they say they are a bad idea? Sounds like they want your business but can't give you what you want.

Wowfudge - that is exactly my suspicion. They said it is hard to access the space through a small opening. It really doesn't look that bad to me, like all corner units not the easiest to access. I thought if it allows a better overall kitchen layout it looked good enough. However, I noticed not many kitchen suppliers do them, so I wondered if there was a reason.

Wickes do something similar so might be worth a visit to see what you think? I want one, it looks amazing!

Yddraigoldragon Wickes are going to install our new kitchen and I was MOST put out that that corner unit wouldn't be feasible in our kitchen. It was fab! You really wouldn't need many other units with the amount of stuff it would hold.

I loved the floor space enclosed by the doors as well, could see many uses for that! Not much chance of a new kitchen just now but I go visit that cupboard occasionally just to have a little catchup

I don't have those like you've linked to, but I can see what the people who don't sell them are saying...... what are you thinking of storing in there?

There are lots of better solutions to making the most of the space in the corner, but still being able to access them.
We have similar idea to these for example.

The drive for having one of these is that it lets us put all our tall units in the back corner of the room, preserving day light which is at a premium. I would probably store bulky items, appliances and oversized pots. Although if it were practical would happily use it for food storage. Thanks for the Wickes tip Yddraigoldragon I will check it out.

I haven't seen anything like what you linked to BackForGood in tall size.

Wickes do one where it has double doors on the diagonal, and you can actually step inside. With shelves, it is like a little pantry. Wish we had room for one. I think it may be bigger than the one in your pic.

I think it might be this one. Note the double full-height doors are on the diagonal so it takes up more room than an "L" shaped corner unit. Someone can work out the length of the hypotenuse.

It could be made in any carcase colour (there are several companies making carcases to order) and have any available doors fitted to it.

That looks fantastic, I'm adding that to my kitchen wish list.

That is the one PJ, I luffs it ! I am somewhat large of frame and it is easily 'walk in able' for me.

The one I was looking at was the smaller version that is not walk in - because that is what fits the space I have. I am now trying to work out if I can rearrange my plans to fit the bigger one!

can't see the dimensions. How wide is the door? By my calculations, the Wickes door is just over 800mm, so two 400m doors plus a bit of fillet, and easy to step through.

The smaller one takes a 600mm door and isn't really walk in. It still seems plenty wide enough to lean in.

Do note that the bigger one is not the same height as either their lower height or their taller height cabinets so it will look odd if planned with tall cabinets or wall units that then link up to other talk units !
In this instance is probably suggest you built one from walls and a small internal door like this

I have the first one type and it is fantastic, I store my pots, pans and all the tupperware. It's the first kitchen I have where I don't need to faf with them so that everything fits in and I don't get attacked by plastic each time I want to access the tupperware. It is big enough that I don't need to sort everything to make the space work.

The second type suggested by PJ seems wonderful too. I need more corners in my kitchen!

OnePlan, thanks for pointing out the height differential or the walk in larder, I won't try and replan my kitchen around the corner

We're planning an extension this year and I want one of these!! Could have that as the food cupboard - get loss in there
We've proposing a back wall with no windows or doors so it could fit into the corner- I wanted that whole wall to be full sided larder type units for - hate bending down for stuff!

I've seen the ealk in one in Wickes and it's on my want list now!
