How the eff do I get in the loft?

Bought our house a few months ago and we still can't figure it out. Asked countless people at B&Q and similar shops and no one seems to know.

Please help! You can reach inside the black hole and just about feel a square hole inside but nothing I've bought has fit it.

I think the intended instrument for opening the hatch is supposed to be one of these However we have always just used a screwdriver and it's worked perfectly well. I am interested to find out what is in the loft though!
