Does anyone have any recommendations of companies that provide this? British Gas are expensive but they are the only company I have experience of using. Would welcome any advice.

How disciplined are you with your money?
The best way to do it if you are not likely to use the money elsewhere is to set up a standing order to a separate account in your own name (maybe for what you are currently giving to British Gas every month?) and then you will have the money there to spend if ever you need a repair. If you don't, you will end up with a nice little pot of money to use for something else.
