How long did it take you to move on the day?

I mean how long did it take your removal men to move everything out, drive to your new house and put it all back in again?

We are a family of 4 living in a 3 bed house, 1 reception room, 1 kitchen diner and a cellar which is full of stuff and I've just had a removal company round to quote. They told me it would take at least 7 hours to get everything done provided we'd done all the packing first so I'd need to pay for a full day. We are moving about 2 minutes down the road.

We are not taking sofa and arm chairs or any of the white appliances with us

Will it really take that long or am I just being massively optomisitic thinking it will take less?

How long it takes depends on how many men they're using and the size of lorry.

We have a couple more rooms than you, plus double garage and loft --crap-We have unfortunately had to move rentals 3 times in the last year, so fairly practiced now!

3 guys pack the day before, then actual removal day takes them about 3 hours to load 7tonne lorry, 10 min drive, 3 hours to unload lorry and another hour to make bed frames up.

We had a team of 6 ladies turn up to pack everything the day before- that took about 4 hours. On the day we had 4 men who arrived at 8 and didn't leave till 6pm that evening. We had a similar size house to yours. So it sounds reasonable I'd say. I think it's easy to underestimate just what a big job it is until you're doing it!

Last time we moved, a couple of years ago, we moved two minutes down the road and the men didn't stop all day - I would agree with Sunnyshores, three hours on, three hours off and another hour for extra bits.

Are you selling/buying? That will make a difference to the time.

Ours turned up at 8.30ish, they did have to nip to a relatives to pick up some furniture we had delivered there, probably about half an hour in total. I'd say it took 2.5 hours to loads the 2 vans, 2 men, and they were very efficient and had a few breaks. This was from a 2 bed house, 4 people, loads of loft crap. Our issue was the waiting. We were waiting to hear about completion. Vans were loaded by 12. Sat around. Apparently completion happened after 2pm. I raced to EAs to get the keys, they hadn't heard anything. Turns out our sols sent the monies but they hadn't been received so keys couldn't be released. Lots of back and forth but it didn't happen until 4.25, just before close of business! Only bloody 3 in the chain, first in chain didn't send monies until 1pm. I raced back to new house, DH helped them this time, had 2 vans unloaded in 1 hour 20 minutes! But we had everything put downstairs so we could carpet upstairs straight away and not have to worry about moving furniture. I think they were done by 6.30. So 10 hours all together. They were actually only moving stuff for about 4 hours of this! They earned a good tip for that.

Oh and we only moved half a mile away as well.

The removals men loaded everything except the bare essential the day before, and that was a long day.

We then blitz cleaned in the evening.

On the day itself the last few bits and bobs were packed, we did a quick sweep clean, and were out of the house by 10. We moved long distance but still arrived at the new house hours before we got the keys.

I think the removals men finally finished at around 8 that night.

Thank you that's really helpful. I've only done one move before and it was just dd and me from a 2 bed flat. Everthing was already packed up and we were in by lunchtime!

Oh and we've already bought the place we're moving to (bridging finance) so don't need to wait for anyone to get out. Just need to be out before we've completed on current house and we'll be moving well before that happens so not so stressed in that respoect thankfully

We last moved in December 2014. From a five bed (2500 sq ft) house to a four bed (slightly smaller) house. Our move (long distance) took five days.

We had four removal guys that took three full days to load the huge lorries (we had already packed our many boxes over the preceding weeks) - one day alone and one whole van was required just to do the garden stuff and we left three garden tables, ten garden chairs, a bar, a log store and a hot tub behind for our buyers but we do have shit loads of large plants in pots etc - and two days for the same four guys to unload at the other end, although our vendor (who had moved out already) agreed for his EA to give the removers the key to the garden so they could move the outdoor stuff up ahead of completion day so they drove this straight up once loaded.

Most of our furniture had to be export wrapped (antique) so this took a bit longer. They packed everything up a few days ahead of completion day so that on that morning they could drive straight to our new house. We slept on the floor the night before completion (sleeping bags!) and did the final clean up early before handing the keys to our buyers - who lived two doors away from our sols - and driving up to meet the removers who had already started moving stuff in by the time we arrived.

As it was just before Christmas and we struggled to get a booking because all the companies we had in to quote were so busy, they moved one load in on completion day (16th) and the rest on the 18th. First day they were here till about 7pm, second they were finished by about 5pm.

I moved from a 2 bed house with a loft full of stuff literally 2 mins down the road. Packers came the day before and packed everything, took all morning to load the lorry [dismantle furniture etc] and the afternoon to get it all in.

They took 1 hour for lunch which is unusual but they had it in hand as they didnt have to drive anywhere and they took pity on us as the previous owners had left the place utterly filthy so we had an hour to figure out where to put stuff while maniacally hoovering.
