Gloss or shaker

So we are finally getting our dream kitchen fitted and I'm.utterly torn between white high gloss handleless or a hand painted shaker style.

I'm.worried that the gloss may age and look really dated byt that a shake style.is a pain to.keep clean.

Any one.else.had a similar dilemma what did ypu choose.and why?

get dirty brown wood Efect coloured doors then they will never look dirty and they are so dated they are Retro

I've lived in two houses with shaker style kitchen units over about 14 years - not difficult to keep clean. I do think that gloss slab doors with no handles will date faster. I do like them, but these things go in cycles and shaker is more classic so less likely to date.

Do you have dogs? We have big dogs and an ivory shaker kitchen. Yes you need to clean the lower doors regularly (especially the crevices) but it never looks dirty at a glance

High gloss units need wiping down constantly because all marks are really obvious. Not that hard/time consuming to do (depending on number of units obviously) but a frequent chore.

I see both as dated now because my parents have had shaker style for 20 odd years and we have high gloss for 10 years and I am a bit fed up of it!

I think the two have very different feels to them. What do you want the overall effect to be? Glossy, handleless units could be very clinical depending on what you are putting them with.
I find shaker style a bit more homely but can look twee if your not careful. PIL have cream shaker with a lot of gingham and hearts and it's a bit naff IMO.

I must say I don't find my high gloss units need loads of wiping. Especially now my children are a little older so no more toddler handprints. Aside from the cupboard near the kettle which often gets tea drips on it I do them maybe once every 6 weeks. Although the light in our kitchen is pretty bad, maybe is it was a very bright room marks would show more.

How about Matt handleless as a compromise?

It's so tricky I want it quite contemporary so definitely no gingham and hearts.

I've seen a lovely handleless shaker but it's a bespoke kitchen so no way we can afford it.

I really like the matt handleless idea and might investigate that more as,that could be the perfect compromise.

I had cream shaker style in my last house and have now got a dark grey high gloss handleless kitchen in my current house. I loved my shaker style kitchen but the crevices in the doors did have to be cleaned a lot which is why I chose the glossy doors for my current home. At the moment (kitchen is only a couple of months old) I am loving the current look and, while I have been wiping the doors (mainly builders' dust), I do think this kitchen will be easier to keep clean than the shaker style but time will tell. Tbh most kitchens date, sometimes it's the tiles/splash backs which look dated rather than the actual cupboards but, of course, they can always be updated fairly cheaply.

Matt handless here - quick wipe over once in a while. Looks modern but not shiny iyswim!

Boring answer, which do you prefer? it is you who is going to have to look at them every day not us.
I have oiled oak cupboards and i love them, i have no idea if they are dated or trendy or whatever because I like them

I was dithering between stainless steel and gloss but have now decided to go for something like this - shaker but with a modern feel.

Sorry know this is a few months old now but I'm having the exact same dilemma. Imperial what did you go with in the end?

I'm leaning more towards gloss I think, just as I really like the look but want cream gloss cabinets and a contrasting grey island and I'm just not sure how grey gloss would look. Spickle, if you're around this thread at all still, would you mind posting any pics of your dark grey gloss please?

We've gone for shaker. When it came to it I only liked the handless kitchens withe the aluminium strip behind and not the j profile doors. They were out of budget so it made our choice for is in a way. It's not fitted yet but I'm very happy with the choice now it's made

Ah thanks. I actually started typing 'I'm definitely leaning towards the shaker' before realising I typed 'I'm leaning more towards gloss' just a few hours ago! Just need to flip a coin and make a decision I think and I know I'll be happy once whichever one arrives.....

shaker - old fashioned. go for gloss handleless.

Shaker is a classic and a classic never goes out of fashion just like a red lipstick.
