Hi

I am looking for a structural engineer in Godalming who is affordable but good, we are looking to knock a few walls down in the kitchen and need some drawings produced, any recommendations?

findanengineer.com is a good place to start but won't have everyone listed. The cheapest will generally be sole operators, and this sort of thing is their bread and butter.

Hi

Go to the institute of structural engineers website. You want to make sure whoever you employ is chartered so should have MIStructE in their title. Becoming chartered is a very difficult and acheiveing this title means they know what they are doing. Most local builders and architects would have someone they use so may be able to make a recommendation. For the sort of work you are talking about you want a small local company or sole trader, larger firms just won't be value for money. You also want to make sure that they provide the calculations for building control. You may be better off going through an architect who would appoint the engineer themselves. Structural engineers generally use the architects drawings as a starting point and add the structural information (beam sizes, pad stones etc).

Not local otherwise I could offer more assistance.
