Living room 10ft X 14ft... Small?

We are moving into our first home in March. There will be me, dp, and young dc and a baby on the way!

Currently living in a 17x14 living room/dining room.

I'm worrying the house will be too small. In the future we are hoping to add on an extension/ conservatory.

I think that's ok. Ours is 22x10 but that includes kitchen also

Depends on the rest of the house eg what size is kitchen is it a kitchen diner ? Is there a big enough hall with space for coats shoes buggy ?

It's a kitchen/dining room, small hall with downstairs toilet, 3 bedrooms, 2 double one single, and bathroom.
Drive for two cars and a big outside

Sounds fine ! Once you moved in look at getting built in storage floor to ceiling.

10x14 is a little small for a living room, can you not open it up by knocking a wall down somewhere?

Ours is that size, it's fine. We have bookshelves all along one of the long walls, with 3 armchairs in front of them. A sofa on one of the short walls with 6' Christmas tree beside it! The other long wall has a piano and double doors to the conservatory. Other short wall has window and radiator. Conservatory is very cold in winter so we don't use it. Used to have a bigger living room in previous house but had dining table in it and I much prefer current layout with separate dining room.

Our living room is 11ft x 13ft so very similar size. You would feel crowded to have 2 sofas in there but it works well with a corner sofa. I live without a coffee table as it makes the room too crowded. I have a folding table I get out when needed.

That's about the size of my living room and it's fine. Just make sure you don't get really huge furniture.
And if you have a separate kitchen/diner as well you should have plenty of room.

Go onto rightmove.co.uk - select any city and ask it to show you min 3 bed & max 3 bed houses (restrict to just houses not flats), sort by price ascending to check what is cheapest then restrict the price range so you are seeing the ones that aren't quite the smallest and cheapest but are not far off.

The resulting houses will all have living rooms of approximately this size. Look at the floor plans to check the dimensions of the living room and look at the corresponding pictures, - I found 4 examples within 3 mins doing this so you can too.

We are building an extension which will be our sitting room when done. Internal measurements are 12 feet by 14 foot 6 inches. It will be fine for a suite of 3 seater, 2 seater and 1 seater. However, we do have a separate dining room. The dining room is currently our sitting room and at 9 foot 10 inches square and it is far too small though will be fine for a dining room.

If there is the potential for building an extension (and I would build this rather than a conservatory) then this will give you time to think about what you really want.

If that is the kitchen / dining room, do you have a lounge aswell (sorry if I am misunderstanding your post). If that is all the downstairs living space, I would say thats small (sorry).

Sorry yes we do have a lounge and dining/kitchen.

Dp has just got the tape measure out and it's about 6ft smaller lengh ways then our current living room, but currently has a dining table in as well lol. So I reckon it will be okay x

I'm a bit confused by this thread as I assume you didn't need a tape measure to tell you that a room 17 feet long is at least 6 feet longer than a room 10 ft long. Actually it should be 7 feet longer. Anyway - you are basically gaining an extra room plus bedroom, outside space etc through the move so you need to look at the whole picture. Presumably you can't afford a house with bigger rooms anyway?

Why are you moving into a house that you think is too small? Didn't you see it before you bought it or see the layout?

I think the width is more problematic than the length. Ours is 11'6x13'6. The 13'6 is fine, but anything less than the 11'6 and we would be a lot more limited with furniture options (and would probably be able to put our feet up on the TV cabinet while sitting on the sofa!)

Haven't been in the house yet and it's still being built..

Can't afford a bigger house, this is our first bought home.

Sounds fine to me. Corner sofas are wider than I thought, but we only have one because we have french doors at one end and it fitted better with the room. So if you wanted a corner sofa just check dimensions carefully.

Do you have alcoves either side of a fireplace etc? They're good for storage eg. book cases/shelves.

Personally I dislike lounge diners and would rather have smaller, separate rooms (or a kitchen diner and separate lounge). Our kitchen is a bit weird. Its 16ft x 8'11. We just have a breakfast bar and units etc in it and use the conservatory as a dining room. Whilst weird dimensions I still like it for being the size it is, more usable than a square kitchen I find.

My living room is 10.5ft x 10ft. I intentionally separated it from kitchen dinner (previously all open L shape space). It is very snug but very square and functional. There are two 2-seater sofas, TV, 1 Billy bookcase and small stackable coffee tables. Ideally there should be one 2-seater and 1 armchair. I much prefer a separate albeit small living room rather than one big open space. It has a french door to the kitchen diner, so we can still half open the space.

Ours is 13x10 iirc. We have one sofa along a long wall, and the window and radiator on the opposite long wall. We then have a fireplace on a short wall, an armchair in the corner between the window and fireplace, and tv in the corner at the other side of the window.

We could fit two sofas in with a bit of jiggling about if we had a smaller tv.

It is a smallish room, I suppose, but we have a kitchen/diner that's 13x14 so that definitely helps.
