Drayton RT212 TRV

Wondering if anyone can help.

Our radiators have this TRV fitted but in one of the bedrooms the dial is stuck. As in I can't turn the dial at all, it's stuck on 0 but the whole white thing rotates if you use enough strength.

We can't loosen it and have no idea how to resolve it. The previous owners used the room as a study and I suspect didn't want the heating on in there so turned it off but this is now our nursery and are having to use an oil-filled radiator in there as it's cold!

We're concerned we're going to break it if we try and force it - does anyone have any suggestions? Why would the dial get stuck?

Additionally, whilst we're here, the radiator on the landing doesn't have a TRV fitted but two (what I suspect to be) lockshields on each end. Why would this be??

you can remove the thermostatic head from the metal valve by undoing the nut under the head. If you go to the Drayton website you can probably download the installation instructions. If the head is faulty it is cheapest to buy a new valve and swap the heads. Try Screwfix. Some TRVs can be locked using pins to prevent the setting being changed.

Wind the head fully upwards before fitting or removing a thermostatic head.

The rad with no TRV might be to protect a multifuel stove or similar, or perhaps it is near the room stat.

I've seen they're inexpensive so happy to buy a replacement but just didn't know if it was a specialist job - we're not exactly DIY competent yet first house Downloading the instructions is a good idea, didn't think of that ha ha!

You say wind the head? Do you mean the whole plastic unit? This is the only thing we can turn with some strength!

The radiator with no TRV is upstairs on the landing, not near the thermostat and no multifuel stoves here - in fact the thermostat is practically above the radiator in the hallway downstairs

wind the head up on some of your other TRVs and you will see how. The top dome turns and the collar stays still.

Winding it up to the high setting takes the pressure off the central button which presses on the pin, so it is easier to turn the nut.

If you are buying a new one, practice with it on your kitchen table. You will soon see how it works.

When you get round to it, get a room stat in your main living room (as long as it does not have a cooker, stove or other source of heat in it) and remove the TRV head in that room. Thermostat in hall is a strange practice that was popular in the 1950's

That's the problem - the main head and the collar are as if they are jammed together - they will only turn together so whilst the others work properly and I can rotate the head independently of the collar, on the stuck one the collar is just turning so I don't think I'm going to be able to accurately take the pressure off.

However, have just been out and bought a replacement TRV so will have a look to see what it looks like and what we can do.

Stupid question alert - I'm guessing no water is just going to come gushing out? If we remove this I have visions of water spraying everywhere as I have no idea how this all works!!

Ironic, re your comment on thermostats in the hallway - this house is only 7 years old!!!! But our intention is to get a smart thermostat, hopefully this week in the Black Friday sales all being well, which will mean it can be repositioned.
