What would you pay someone to fit a carpet?

In a large bedroom, to take the old one and fit new. We are in Essex if that makes a difference.

Yes, unless you've got one of those things they use to stretch the carpet into a tight fit all around the edge of the room.

We bought one of those things mentioned above for 25 quid and did it our selves.

Our local carpet shop requires us to pay the fitters £35 whenever we've had a carpet fitted... They don't generally take away the old one though...

Sorry I ment how much would you expect to pay, buying carpet online, I paid 35 too once but that was for a carpet bought in the shop.

Around £3-£5 per square metre is about right. So £35 sounds normal. The shop will likely have paid the fitter as a sub contractor anyway.

£35 sounds very cheap to me. Moving furniture, straightening boards, banging in grippers, fitting underlay, fitting carpet, putting furniture back, taking up old carpet, underlay and grippers and disposing thereof. In, say a bedroom sized room 12x12?) I'd expect that to be at least £150, possibly more.

If it's just fitting underlay and carpet then the kind of rates mentioned upthread. I don't think we paid any extra when we had to have grippers fitted as well - they were already there in other rooms.

We took up and disposed of old floor coverings ourselves and the fitters tidied up and bagged up waste. Again it was down to us to dispose of it.

Thank you. I always think it would be hundreds and hundreds to get anyone in to do anything, that's why I do most cosmetic things myself. There is that site where you can post your job on there for tradespeople to see, but it asks how much you want to pay, obviously I don't want to guess if I don't have a clue. I would be happy to pay £100 to the fitter, I don't want an expensive carpet because I have a dog, so I would rather have a cheaper one and replace maybe after 5 years or so. I think I may need to rid of the old carpet myself for that.
