Sealing around edge of pale carpets

Carpet fitters here today - want me to spend an additional £200 on 'edge sealant' to stop a dark line from coming through from underneath the edge.

John Lewis didn't mention this when the measured and quoted; it is the fitters (sub-contractors) who have suggested it.

Interesting. We have very pale carpets in one bedroom over old wooden flooring, and after a few years, we do have a dark line at the edge (and the carpet that we replaced also had a dark line). I'm not sure that it would be worth an extra £200, rather like that car protection kit that I was sold as an extra with my new car was only glorified shampoo. Should this actually be included in the fitting cost? And what would it involve...is it for example a wide strip of adhesive film attached to the perimeter of the room? Effective perhaps, but an easy £200 for the fitters. Watching with interest.

Here is a previous thread with advice on what would need to be done to prevent the problem. Builders paper sealed to the floor and also sealing the edges where there is a gap between skirting board and floor seem the minimum requirements but removing all previous dust with the proviso that it can be very messy, to completely stop the problem.

Well, I think I'll go ahead with the caulk. It seems that vacuuming won't really help much even if I'm diligent every week with the crevice thingy.

We did all the proper sealing in an old house - still got the dark edges.
