changing kitchen cupboard handles

Hi I have the kitchen units in the photo. I'm hoping to spruce them up by painting and would ideally like to change the handles for something more modern. (Potential daft question alert) do I need to choose new handles which fit the same size holes, or is it possible to get the existing holes filled and finished to a high standard, then attach the new nice handles? Ps the photo is sideways, sorry about that.

if you're going to paint them, and the holes don't match, fill and smooth them, then drill the new holes, before painting

I quite like the bar ones, but choose a style that will not easily catch on your clothes when you brush past.
