converting a garage into an annex - what door?

Standalone white rendered single storey garage, could really be any style.
Being made into a separate self contained unit. What do do with the garage door opening? There is a rear door, so doesnt have to be a front door.

I know we could just brick up the current door opening and put in standard window/door arrangement. But wondered if anyone had anything a bit different?

big window, or patio door kind of thing? With a lot of glass you will lose heat, so include a curtain pole for heavy lined curtains. For privacy you might also want daytime cafe curtains, perhaps in a thin pale material that will allow light.

If it catches the sun you might consider venetian blinds or plantation shutters, if you happen to like either of them.

Thanks PJ. I like the idea of a big window, sort of arch shape maybe. Any idea were I could look for companies doing this?

I have had a large arched window, but I don't think I've seen anyone making them as stock. If you were very very lucky you might buy one as architectural salvage that was near enough the right size.

Sometimes it is faked with a rectangular window and a curved false arch of wood painted to match the windowframe and covering the flat top. I've had French windows like that. Each door or panel was made with a curved top section so the rectangular glass looked curved. This was to match an original Edwardian set on the other wing of the house. You're talking custom joinery. To make a complete arched window would be more serious joinery, and might cost some thousands. AFAIK sealed DG units are not available with curved tops, but I think you can order them with sloping tops.

Arched brickwork is also very uncommon now so I think you would have to rely on a concrete or steel lintel and woodwork to give the impression of an arch.
