Fake 'living flame' fireplace: anything nice to replace?

We have bought a house that has one of those 'living flame' gas fireplaces with fake coal, 'brass' surround and marble hearth etc. There is a chimney behind the fire and the fire is set into the wall. It's not too offensive as these things go but not our taste at all and makes the room seem very old fashioned. I'm really not sure what to do with it and was wondering whether anyone who is more gifted at this kind of thing would have any ideas? I had thought about closing it up but the house is 50s and the room is basically a boring box so at least the fire gives a focal point. Is there anything that we could easily put in its place?

Well you can get really nice trendy modern living flame fireplaces that literally sit on the wall.

Very easily installed. We have one in a basement room conversion.

We have a 50s style wall mounted, flueless gas fire in the room without a chimney breast. We have a log burner in the other room and considered getting something similar, but electric, for the TV room. I'm glad we didn't, as this one isn't pretending to be anything it's not, and I like the 50s look as a contrast to the other room.
