Can anyone recommend a really good log-splitting axe?

That's it really. I want to invest in a decent one, but I haven't a clue where to start.

I'm happy to be advised to get a log splitter instead if that's the best route.

Thank you!

I use this bahco splitting axe. Its a nice size and weight for me (5' 2") and splits beautifully, though I've seen reviews from taller men saying they find it a little on the light side.

IMO a decent axe is always going to be the quickest way to split a big pile of wood, though we also have this which works a treat on really stubborn bits or if my back's feeling a bit dodgy.

Should say the log splitter is a lot slower over a big pile.

That Bahco job's a bit dear innit?

Hickory handled 6lb splitters can be picked up for about 25 quid.

That Swedish thingy looks handy though.

It is, but it's probably twice as good as any of our other axes. I use it a lot, and am prone to a bad back, so the extra was well worth it for me.

Ha, thanks all. I think that's DH's Christmas present sorted.

Brilliant. Thank you.

Dh is probably going to use it most, and he is well over 6'.

I'd go for something a bit heavier, then, definitely.

Thanks Sadik, I might get the little one for me :)

We've got a set of a log grenade and double-sided sledgehammer/splitting maul. (Roughneck ones from screwfix) As a beginner, I'm much more comfortable using the splitting grenade with sledgehammer combo than a splitting maul. Been using them today and got quite a bit split despite being weedy!
