External air admittance valve

This morning a plumber fitted an external air admittance valve onto an outside soil pipe. Previously the top end of the soil pipe stopped under the soffit and I wanted to extend it to go above the gutter. The plumber suggested fitting an air admittance vavle. But now reading online, these air admittance valves seem to have quite a few negative reviews. Have you got one fitted and working with no problems?

I think I might know a tiny bit about this - as I recall the main thing is to ensure that it is vertical as per the instructions. Didn't seem a terribly complex device buy maybe I missed something?

The plumber said these are now mostly fitted on new houses. He's not my usual plumber so I don't have much trust in him.
