Small flies/gnats in house

We constantly have a few small flies/gnats flying around our house, they are worse in the dining room (front) and living room (back) although not in the extension part of this room. I'm finding a few in the hall and kitchen and just caught one upstairs in our bedroom. We have quite a few outside by the extension and also in the compositor. I don't care about the outside ones, but any ideas why we have them in the house and how to get rid of them - without chemicals if possible as we have cats and fish.

If they are really tiny, in a kitchen they may well be fruit flies, which breed quickly and like, as well as fruit, peelings in bins and possibly some vegetables, also at this time of year, might be coming in from the garden.

I believe they are attracted to the smell of wine and vinegar, so you might trap some using the jam-jar with a hole in the lid method.

I was also going to suggest fruit flies. We also find them breeding in orchid pots occasionally and I assume they could do so in other indoor plants. I used fly paper which worked for the majority of them.

Try squirting some bleach gel stuff down the overflow in your kitchen sink. That's been the source of tiny flies in our house in the past.

Check your houseplants - I found they were hatching from the compost and then sitting on the leaves.
