MFC fitted furniture

We've just had a quote for putting a fitted unit in my sins bedroom. It's in a wide alcove and will be half shelves and half hanging space. I was pleasantly surprised by the quote until he said it was for 18mm mfc. This is just chipboard? Suddenly I'm less sure as I want a piece of furniture that looks good, can be painted and will last . Have any of you got experience of mfc ? I'm not sure whether to ask for it to be made of something else which I assume would cost a lot more.

It's what a lot of kitchen unit carcasses are made of.

Really? I assumed they would be mdf. I see chipboard as cheap flat pack furniture that won't last. And for 700 pounds I need to be sure that's not the case!!

Ah - my brain totally saw that as mdf! Can you ask for a quote for mdf instead?

Yes I think I will. Otherwise honestly we might as well go to ikea!

Though to be fair my parents had fitted wardrobes put in my room when I was about 10 and they're still there and not falling apart. They had wood veneer doors though.
