Anybody know where I might get some naice doorknobs?

The ones we're coming across are too modern. We want something plain, but with a traditional look. We did want ceramic, but can't find anything nice. The ones we did find are all in modern shapes.

Also, we've had brass doorknobs before, but they discoloured quite quickly. We need something that's decent quality.

I've looked on eBay for some older/vintage ones, but we need four pairs and there's usually just one or two available.

Any website recommendations?

Bombay Duck have a few, they mostly do cupboard door knobs but have a few for doors. Also Door Handle Company do porcelain ones.

Place marking. I've found some decent ish ones by googling for beehive handles but I'm definitely on a 1920s hunt

The cupboard ones are so pretty, but obviously very small.

I'll take a look at that website.

Try Period Features www.periodfeatures.co.uk/period-hardware/door-knobs/ceramic-door-knobs

try Ironmongerydirect

Brass will always tarnish and need frequent polishing, unless it is lacquered. This is not a quality thing. If you scratch the lacquer, or wear it away, the brass underneath will tarnish so you need to strip it off, re-polish and re-laquer.

Or you could go for patinated bronze, and let it take on the colour of an old penny.

Depending on the period of your house, there's a company called Merlin Glass which makes beautiful solid round glass door handles (which I have always coveted and only ever bought as feature items). They are (or used to be) in Cornwall. Solid, and the guy offers a choice of lacquered not not, or chrome.
