New Southgate/Arnos Grove -How is like to live there?Advice needed

Hello Everyone

We are considering buying a house just off Oakleigh Road-east (north of both stations). I must admit first impression getting off New Southgate station was not the best. It felt v industrial and there is a lot of traffic and big roads.
The house is beautiful and within our budget (and 10 min to the station). So it seems ideal- only the location is a big question mark. We need to put an offer by the end of the week! scary...

How is it to live around there? How's the community? what streets/area should we avoid and which one should we go for? I read there is a big housing project going on south of the station.

Furthermore, I can see that there are 2 schools within 0.4miles of the property (Garfield and Holly Park). How hard is the admission process to get into Holly Park? where does your child go if both schools are equidistant from your house? (pls excuse my ignorance- currently trying for a baby!).

Many thanks in advance, your advice would be so helpful!! Grin

Sophia.

Hi Sophia, I know it's been quite a few years but I wonder what did you end up doing and happy are you with your decision.
I'm afraid I'm in a similar situation now :)

Look on the Crime Figures sites for the area. Try to join some local community sites and read the messages.

Southgate is pleasant enough, nice sized houses etc. however there seem to be a lot of cats reported missing around Oakleigh area. Look at Osidge, I wouldn't buy near a station.

Thanks for your response DontCallMeShitley. Do you know of any Arnos Grove community sites? I couldn't find anything, which makes me think there isn't much of a community there. We're specifically thinking of a place very close to the Arnos Park, about 10mins from the station. The main thing that worries us is that being used to the hustle and bustle of Haringey, suburban lifestyle will be too much of a shock for us and we will regret it. From the other hand people seem very nice around there ans there's a lot of good schools for our (future) kids.

@Pawian Sorry, only just found your response.

I don't know Arnos Grove too well but I know someone who lives in Southgate which is a pleasant place, but does seem to attract a fair bit of crime, people kicking doors in to burgle houses, and car crime.

Arnos Grove seems quite nice but I prefer a quieter area.

I would suggest joining one of the community sites like Scoop Loop or Next Door and look for the area you are interested in.
