New house! Living room! I didn't want brown and cream, I wanted quirky and colourful. Walnut gloss floor. Sofa dark brown almost black. Painted the walls cream. DP hated all of my wallpaper choices. I wanted crazy. We agreed on taupe with silver trees (yawn)
Anyway I don't have blinds, light shade, cushions or other accessories. I need colour! I need quirk!
I have no eye for design. Help me avoid the brown and cream trap.

Sorry I should have said the wallpaper is on the chimney breast. We had to paper it due to the state of the plaster.

Well, it's a very neutral palette so you could put quite a lot of combinations of in it. Rich purples/blues/greens could look nice. Make the most of soft furnishings so lots of cushions in brighter colours, some throws with texture and a rug, possibly curtains (although I prefer blinds). Some great pictures on the wall to break up the cream and some shelves too. When choosing things, avoid red though as I think that tends to dominate the other colours.

I think I've died inside just listening to your description. Brown and cream is awful, you have to move.

Could you take the taupe wallpaper off and put something else on there? It's going to be hard to get rid of the brown and cream flavour if you have taupe on the wall.

GoldPlatedShitGibbon · 14/09/2015 22:34

Something like this? Then paint the other walls a chalky white.

GoldPlatedShitGibbon · 14/09/2015 22:36

If you like trees this is gorgeous.

gold if only I could rip the paper off! FiL just finished it a few days ago, I've decided I hate it. I really wanted scion little foxes or scion hex in green (think it was hex) but DP was a complete twat and hated all my choices.
lala so I could add peacocky colours? Sounds quite nice.

this is what I'm stuck with I'm just sitting here thinking 'shit how did this happen'.

Yes, definitely peacocky colours. I don't think the taupe is a disaster but I would be considering repainting the cream. It's only paint, it'll take a day topsSmile

gaggiagirl · 14/09/2015 22:59

I certainly will. I'm due a baby literally any day now and I want it how I want it before baby gets here

And woolly throws/rugs

Orange - get some orange throws, cushions, lampshades it will brighten it up

gaggiagirl · 15/09/2015 04:01

what ooh I have 2 original pieces to choose from for the chimney breast, good thinking! They are both tree paintings funnily enough.
nancy I thought orange! I wasn't sure if it was right though but I could enjoy orange.

Burnt orange, muted gold/ mustard yellow and silvery grey will sort it out. Work in a few different textures, silks, crocheted wool. Stay away from chenille or shaggy rugs unless you want it to look like the next catalogue. Don't be afraid to use patterns, you don't want everything too matchy.

TremoloGreen · 15/09/2015 11:24

I second paintung over the cream if you can pick an off white out of your wallpaper. Also, give DH another household project to keep himself busy while you make the rest of the decorating decisions Wink

That JL hedgerow stuff is gorgeous (how bloody annoying)

gaggiagirl · 15/09/2015 23:03
