Loft extension - who sleeps in it?

MamaDuckling · 14/09/2015 19:53

Long story short, we are planning a loft extension to house our ever growing family. I had dreams of a nice big boudoir up there and an en suite, possibly with a walk in wardrobe!!
MIL is adamant we can't have kids sleeping a floor below us. It's not safe, apparently!
I've heard a few people mention this before but it certainly seems a bit of a drastic opinion!
We live in a super safe residential suburb.
Interested in others opinions on this...

Your house, your rules.

dingit · 14/09/2015 19:56

How old are your dc?

Pooka · 14/09/2015 19:57

We do!

Kids all fine down on first floor. Part of building regs is installation of mains smoke detectors in landings.

It's never been an issue.

sooperdooper · 14/09/2015 19:58

Lots of people sleep in three story houses - I don't see the issue

dingit · 14/09/2015 19:58

Mine were 9 and 6 when we did ours. Nextdoors ( done at the same time) 11, 3 and 0!

We do (and love it). DS on the floor below. Never had any problems.

hackedoffnow · 14/09/2015 19:59

I agree I would want to sleep on the same level as the DC - next best I would sleep below. We always take the downstairs bedroom on holiday even though they are always dark and have no view.

Pooka · 14/09/2015 19:59

We've had the loft room since DC were about 2 and 4, then youngest DC was born (in the loft!) and moved to his room downstairs when he was about 18minths (avid co sleeper - still is quite often).

HereIAm20 · 14/09/2015 22:22

We have done it the other way round as we have an Edwardian house with high ceilings so DS has the modern loft with an en suite bathroom as it can't fit enough wardrobe storage for us. He has a double bed and a futon sofa (under the slope) for sleepovers.

Boysclothes · 14/09/2015 22:29

We're having one done now.... We're putting two bedrooms up there as well as a bathroom so the children can go up there. I wouldn't feel comfy with them a floor below. I'm a pretty lax parent I couldn't sleep. It's only stud walls though so we can make it a giant boudoir one day if we want to!

carmugz · 14/09/2015 22:44

we are nearly finished our loft room. our 2 and 5 year old will sleep below us. i feel a bit twitchy about it but need the space. will probably sleep with door wide open. tried to fit two bedrooms for dcs (eventually) but just not enough space up there as our house has a pretty small footprint.

why do they think its unsafe? First in line if fire/intruder?

rhetorician · 14/09/2015 22:47

we had ours done last year (with en suite), our DDs are 3 and 6 and sleep on the floor below. They did keep invading appearing for a while after we moved up there, but I love it, feels like our space - despite their desire to occupy it. I can hear them in the night just as well from upstairs as when we were next door.

superram · 14/09/2015 22:56

Our two children are in the loft. I have the fear of burglars/fire. Irrational but it allows me to sleep.
