Who has responsibility for shared entryway?

Hi, I live in a terraced house which has access to the back garden via an archway, so to get from my back garden to the street (ie to put bins out) I have to go through ndn's garden and through entry on far side of their house, so it runs under their bedrooms and the bedrooms of the house the other side of them. Does anyone know who holds responsibility for maintenance of this entryway? It needs weeding, which dh is happy to do but it could do with painting too. Ndn's are a bit of a pita, think old cars outside and tyres etc in the garden and I'm thinking that they (along with their other ndn) are responsible for the upkeep as it's under their house but cant see them doing it!

It sounds like it belongs to one of the 2 neighbours and you have right of access to your garden through it. You would need to check the deeds to find out exactly who is responsible for it but unfortunately you can't make someone weed and paint if they don't want to. As long as its not a hazard or dangerous then I think you'll just have to put up with it.

The weeds are a hazard, it has a cobbled floor which is quite uneven and the weeds are growing through the cobblestones. Pulling a wheelie bin over it is a nightmare. As I said, dh is going to weed it as it makes our lives easier if we don't have to worry about tipping the bin over every week. I'm not sure it says on the deeds who it belongs to but I'll dig them out and have a look.

Why not ask them if they mind you doing it? If they are okay with that, spray the weeds with weed killer and see how it goes.
