moving to Guildford, or...?

Hi all,

We'll be moving to UK in one or two months. My husband will be working in Guildford. I have a 2 years old son so I wonder where is the best place to live, considering his and our needs. He's just started making up sentences in our mother language, so I have no idea how to start with English as a new language. Should I look for special nurseries or any would accept him? Do you have any suggestions?

We'll have to look for furnished rentals, our total income will be around 4000 per month so please relieve me saying that would be sufficient for rent, school and life costs :)

thanks much in advance...

That amount sounds fine, don't worry about your son's language, it's staggering how quickly children can pick up language if they go to preschool. Guildford is a nice town, if you haven't got any reason to be anywhere else, I'd say to live there or one of the nice outlying villages if you want a slower pace of life, like Worplesdon or Bramley? It's a lovely area.

thank you for your comment MrsJasmin :) Actually we are used to the city life, currently living in Istanbul which is a very crowded city. I'm even worried we can be bored if we live in a village. :)

I teach Reception in a primary school (4-5 year olds). I have children start the year with no English and by the end they are speaking, reading and writing in English.

At 2 your son will be just fine. As your English is excellent (judging from your post!) you will be very well able to support him too. Good luck with the move!

Onslow Village, in Guildford, is a great area for access to nurseries and schools. Surrey university has a nursery that is multicultural, so they'll be used to children starting with little English.
