In terms of kitchens what's the difference between modern and contemporary

Just been looking online and quite a few sites have kitchens divided up into the categories in my title. As far as I can see they all look modern. Or perhaps they all look contemporary? I can't see what differentiates modern v contemporary.

Nothing really. Contemporary means 'of the moment' and you can apply modern to a broader span of time. I think it can be pretentious to use contemporary.

Thank you wow, that makes sense. So a contemporary kitchen will not be contemporary for any time at all then. Seems a bit like shooting yourself in the foot to describe one of your kitchens as contemporary

Ime the term is used interchangeably with modern, the definition I gave is the literal meaning.

Modern = not old fashioned, but a bit bland.

Contemporary = fashionable but will date quickly and sometimes just downright odd.

Purely my own definitions though

Usually:
Traditional = timber dorrs with intricate cut aways, bevelled or chamfered edges

Contemporary = flat, 5 piece, simplified shaker design, painted matt in a trendy colour (pigeon's toe or whatever)

Modern = slab doors, maybe gloss, any colour but pure white, pure black or any bright colour will usually be 'modern'

BIt of course "Tabula and Tremola" would make an even better name
