Damp inside fitted wardrobe

We are having our wardrobes taken out tomorrow and having not really given them much thought (they were inherited and in a cureently unused room) I've opened them today to find the back is all mildewy and gross.

The wardrobes have a fitted back rather than just using the wall. Is it likely that the wall behind will be bad?

The wardrobes are on an external wall built around the chimney breast.

Wanting to brace myself for extra cost etc...

probably! is it an old house? Might be that putting a back in has stopped the wall behind 'breathing'. We had this in our cottage when we moved in and have ripped out all the fitted wardrobes and now have free standing antique ones. No more mold so far.

Thank you Bilbo! There was a l ittlle bit of mould on the wall but the decorator has cleaned it up and treated it - should be ok to paint later in the week he thinks. It is a 1930s detached so the outside walls do get cold.

Thanks for the response even though I couldn't see it until the wardrobes were out bloody DDoS
