Anyone know anything about polypropylene carpet please?

We are thinking about replacing the carpet on our stairs and landing (so needs to withstand a lot of traffic). I was in a carpet shop today and most of the carpets seemed to be made of polyethylene. I was always led to believe that an 80% wool carpet is the way to go but the salesman said this carpet was great for coping with stains.

Do any of you have experience of this type of carpet and would you recommend it?

My two main concerns are whether it allows you to build up static (I have a tendency to give / get shocks) and also if there are harmful chemicals in it?

polypropylene carpet will stand up to intensive cleaning, even bleach, and is probably good in a child's room or a hall where it may get marked.

I have had a "heather twist" which is resistant to flattening and the speckled colour does not show marks or traffic lines much. It is cheaper than an 80/20 of equivalent density, and I think probably better than a thin budget wool or 80/20 of the same price. It felt dense and nearly as soft.

I am told it flattens more under furniture.

I didn't experience static but I prefer leather shoes with at least a part leather sole indoors, or no shoes, which are not conducive to static.

We have a polypropylene carpet in a small bedroom. Seems fine. We have wool mix carpets on the heavy traffic areas.

I should add, the modern synthetic carpets are a million miles away from the crackly static filled nylon ones of old from what I have seen!

I have it. It almost sounded like a miracle carpet at the time. It has kept stains where I didn't get to them immediately. For example, oh is colour blind and due to nature of carpet didn't see his spilled tea on his office floor . By the time I found it there was no getting it up. Also it went flattish pretty quickly. Having said that it was cheaper than wool, which I had before and for me (not a carpet connoisseur) I really don't notice an appreciable difference.

I have one in Mt stairs and hall. I have a pile that the Carpet shop recommended that was brushed to the side to avoid looking flat in the middle of the stairs.
I honestly would opt for it again. It was guaranteed bleach cleanable and it is. I have 3 dc and a dog.traipsing over it and it's so easy to clean.

We have just had Cormar sensation twist laid upstairs and it's the nicest carpet I've ever had.

They aren't stain proof at all though.
My dad has a light carpet in her room recently.
It looks trashed already.
I cannot get the stains out at all.

We've had ours about half a year.

It has flattened in places, it also has light stains in some places (just small ones) but that is with three children inc a toddler and I haven't actually cleaned those places properly so I imagine it will come out when I do.

Things have come out - our joiner spilled knotting compound on it in ds's bedroom, I mean loads of it - the bottle broke - and didn't even tell me for about half an hour as he thought it would never come out and had resigned himself to getting us a new carpet.

I got some white spirit and a cloth and went to it right away and it all came out, just about - literally can't see anything there now.

I think that was one of the worst and best moments of his life

I hate carpet in general but if you're getting it, then get this. Btw get a good quality one and get the same colour throughout - it's cheaper that way but you still get the quality which means it wears far better.

I don't know about the chemicals - it didn't smell noticeably though - and wrt shocks, I don't get them but then I rarely wear socks in the house.

We have had it on stairs & landing, plus sitting room for 5+ years. Agree or it being brilliant for stains. Red wine, coffee, 3 DC's mess. It has flattened on bottom rung of stairs but not noticeably elsewhere. The only thing that has let it down is a pull - it was caught in the hoover (probably the hoover ' s fault rather than the carpets) and a line of thread unravelled. Not sure whether this would have happened with a better quality carpet?

I would still have again.
