How noisy are loft conversions in terraced houses?

Our neighbours have just told us they are having a lift conversion at the same time I am going to be having my baby.

It's a terraced house and I'm panicking a bit that it's going to be really noisy, and I won't get any rest at all.

So can someone please tell me honestly how noisy it's going to be?

I didn't hear much apart from work men's voices on the scaffolding. Good thing is they knock off at 4 o clock in the afternoon, and I was up early anyhow with the dc's.

Our ndn had one done while I was on maternity leave a couple of years ago. Not noisy at all. The only disruption was the noise of scaffolding going up and the lack of space round the front door due to the scaffolding. And we're small terraces - 2/3 bedroom. You should be fine.

That's a relief. I've been worried that it would be really noisy all day, every day for weeks on end.

Any other experiences?

My next door neighbour's extention (detached houses) was VERY noisy, mainly because they did it themselves from 7am to 7pm including Sundays.

Most builders are more considerate, and they usually work from 8am and are gone by 4pm. I would keep a bag packed by the door and have somewhere planned to go for if they hit a particular noisy bit.

There's nowhere I can go unfortunately. I'm really hoping they don't get organised to do it in time.

My NDN had a new roof last June, then from November till now they have been doing a loft conversion and making the joints stronger because the new roof is tiles not slates like the orginal roof. As I type this they are still hammering and banging. They have not been round once to apologise about the noise even though we are 3 adults at home all day and DD works different shifts. We wish we had known that they could only work 8 till 6 Monday till Friday and 8 till 1 on a Saturday and not 7 days a week any hours they wanted, check this with your council. Any noise problems check with your other neighbours to see if it affected them. The stress of all the noise has affected all of us and to make it worse they always went out when the builders were there. Let them know if it is affecting you.

We had a loft conversion done in a terraced house at the same time as NDN and I was in the house when a lot was done. It's really not as loud as you'd expect, plus the 'noisier' bits in terms of the hard build are only for a very short burst of the whole thing (ours was done from start to finish in 8 weeks).

Our neighbours across the street though had a bunch of cowboys and their shouting and v squeaky pulley drove this end of the street mad!

I'm sure it won't bother you as much as you think it might.

Rabbits, it sounds like your neighbours have hired cowboys - huge sympathies. Most straightforward conversions are done in 8-10 weeks.

I'm taking a lot of comfort from this thread. Our conversion (hip to gable) has been delayed a bit and is currently scheduled to finish three days before my due date with DC2...
