Edinburgh and surrounds

DH may\may not have job offer in Scotland. I'm not overly keen on the idea, more of a lazy attitude than not wanting to go. So I thought if I researched a bit I might become a bit more interested. I would need to live somewhere with good transport links to and from Edinburgh so DH could commute. I don't mind being rural,small village or small town, I don't think I'd like to live in Edinburgh itself. I would prefer to be near the English border direction simply so it is easier to visit family but this isn't a necessity!
We have 1 DS and plan on having another sometime so need good school
Any help appreciated and if you could just send me off in the right direction.

It also doesn't help that I've never been to Scotland either.

It might be an idea to re-post on Scotsnet - there's a few threads just now about relocating to Scotland and our crap weather

Maybe have a think about Peebles, West Linton, or along the Borders rail line, which is due to open in the next year or so. Maybe North Berwick. East Lothian is very pretty & has rail links to Edinburgh along the East Coast Line.

Where is your husband likely to be based for work? Easier to advise if I know that.

I know someone in exactly these circumstances who moved to Dunbar. On the east coast mainline, on the coast, nearer the border for what it's worth. They're very happy there though it would be too bleak for me.

School system is different but they are happy with it. As it stands the difference over university fees is a big plus. Think that you have to be resident for three years to benefit. I wouldn't place reliance on either system being as now in the future if I had small children though.

I think one of their initial challenges was the different system for house sales and getting it all to fit.

East Lothian is £££ but lovely. Good for the main East coast line to England if that's a priority. Peebles nice but no train and the driving commute is like a procession and it's hard to get in to the city centre once you reach Edinburgh. Melrose lovely and will benefit from train link at Tweedbank but it's megabucks. Schools full to bursting but very good. Depends where he is working in Edinburgh. If he's at the gyle or at leith you'll need to live a lot closer or the commute will be hellish.

Thanks for that, we would be planning to rent for a few years. I will have a look at those mentioned. :D it seems a minefield at the moment! Thank you

Even if you are west of the city the bypass is there and then the motorway so getting to englandshire is easy.

I live just south of Edinburgh. House prices in the city itself ( and along the East coast railway line) are pricey.

It is worth noting that The new Borders Railway line is just about to open, linking Galashiels to the heart of Edinburgh Waverley, with new stations at lots of towns along the way.
Housing at these towns is still amazingly cheap, but prices are set to rocket after the railway opens.
I bought a house last year ( partly because of that reason) a 5 bedroomed semi in a lovely wooded quiet area, stunning location, near a good school and little town,, 2 minutes walk from the station, and 14 minute train ride into the heart of the city. The house cost me £205K.
