Open plan layout and building regs

Does anyone know what the rules are with regards to having an open plan kitchen on the ground floor with stairs to the first floor. Does there need to be a door between? Do all of the upstairs doors need to be fire doors? Do things change if a loft extension is added? Any advice much appreciated.

Not sure of regs now, but the house we're buying had walls removed to make it open plan and got building regs sign off for that.

Our surveyor did recommend adding a door back in for fire safety (people we're buying from added walls back but no doors).

How many floors are there in total ? In general if there's more than two floors you need to keep the stairs and exit safe from fire, so open plan is only possible if you install a mist or sprinkler system.

At the moment we just have two floors but I would like to convert the loft at some point in the future. Downstairs there are four small rooms and a large hall and I would like to open up to over the rooms to hall. Any idea how much a sprinkler system costs if that's whats required?
