If an individual, ensure that they are ARB registered (check the architects register on www.arb.org.uk), check their extent of cover for Professional Indemnity Insurance (make sure they carry insurance), and ask to see examples of their previous work that is similar to what you hope to engage them to undertake, to see if it matches your needs and style. Check if they can provide the whole service that you need (may need structural engineer advice etc, which may be additional).
Similar checks for appointing a company.

Tie the cost against an agreed timescale, level of service and quality of work.

For more information look at www.architecture.com on the Find an architect / How do I use an architect section.

Hi sorry to post on an old thread, but I was curious to know what architect you ended up with and whether you can recommend them. I am struggling to find a decent architect in the area (or not even in the area). There appears to be only one other thread on Mumsnet around architects, yet so much expansion work going on, somebody must want to recommend their architect??
