Need to dispose of an old mattress? Who can help?

I need to dispose of an old mattress. I am not getting a new one though so can't get the bed company to take it away. My council only takes things away if you have at least seven items. Does anyone know who would take it? I have tried charities but they don't want it. I really need it scrapped but dont have room in my car to do this. Thanks

WTF- 7 items- who came up with that random figure?

What do the council class as 'an item'?

If they don't specify I'd be tempted to find 6 small things that you'd normally put in the household bin and get them to collect those along with the mattress Grin

Are you sure it's a minimum of 7 items? Where I live it's a maximum of 6.

Our council have a fee that is fixed regardless how many items up to a maximum, is that what your council mean?
