Need help with an ugly conservatory.

We have just bought a house that has this ugly conservatory - not only is it attached to the front of the house, it also forms the main entrance to the house.

We have long term plans for major renovations to the house which include getting rid of the conservatory altogether but, realistically, it will be 2 years at least before we can do the work. In the meantime, I'm stuck welcoming people to my new home with this as their first impression. At present it feels neither like an entrance hall nor a particularly pleasant room to sit in.

Any suggestions for how to give it a defined purpose and make it feel welcoming whilst diverting attention from its general hideousness? It does have impressive views but not much else going for it.

Rest of the house is a renovated/extended rural cottage and still has a cottagey feel which I intend to retain but update.

Any suggestions most welcome.

First of all it's not actually that hideous however I do understand your irritation. Why don't you find out how much it is to remove it? it may not be as much as you think. If it is expensive I would add two Baytrees to either side of the front door then inside I would add an occasional chair, a small sofa, shoe storage and a coat rack and possibly a small side table.

I'd fill it with plants. Make it a sort of enclosed front garden type thing

I am the kiss of death to plants, so it would be more likely to end up like the place that plants go to die. Maybe some fake ones could work though?

When it's gone, it will be replaced with a much larger extension so it can't really be done any sooner than our planned timeline.

Like the idea of a coat rack etc but thought it might look messy from the outside? Waht sort of coatrack would you suggest?

Id go for a traditional ornate coat rack one that can also store umbrellas. You may as well make it work for you from a storage point of view. You could have bench seating that doubles as shoe storage too. Make it s quirky space.

Bench seating is a great idea! It could almost become a play space for DD then too as her toys could go inside. Thanks ifiwereyou
