How big should a bathroom be?

We're extending our top floor over the garage to create a new family bathroom as we're pinching part of the existing one for our en suite.

How big should it be? It'll be 2m wide but can be as long as it needs to be. The door will be on the long wall and the window on the short.

I probably need to plan the bathroom really so I can make sure it's big enough.

We'll definitely have a bath. No need for a separate shower. Possibly a combi boiler and a cupboard for towels would be good.

If you have the space, do put a separate shower in, don't just have one over the bath and put a good bath in.

I hate showers over baths ( I have one) in my next house all showers will be freestanding with no doors either, hate my arse or tits squashed up against the door.

The really big bathroom in our current house was a big selling point for me when we looked round. It was great to be able to have 2 dc in the bath, another in the shower, plus room for an airer (for towels), and a chair plus plenty of elbow room for various dc being able to dry themselves at the same time.
If you have the space / opportunity I wouldn't scrimp on space.

If you have the space, I would definitely have a shower. And make it a big one, not just a small square one

Yes, defo a big shower - one of those glass ones without doors. Lovely big bath tub. Maybe two basins (I'm on the fence about that actually, but if it'd be handy for you as a family to have two?), plenty of storage space. Plenty of heated towel rails. And a chair. I love chairs in bathrooms!

Bigger the better. I like being able to have kids in bath, just in shower without door so I keep eye on them, whilst dh shaves or something all at once

Oh Yes Big enough for a chair is great. When the children were tiny I liked to bath both, leave 18 month in bath and breastfeed baby next to bath. That way saved time After

Our current bathroom is 2.2m x 1.8m. It is fine as a bog standard family bathroom, not big but adequate. No room for a separate shower but absolutely fine with shower over bath. We are re-doing the bathroom (and putting in an ensuite) and I found a brochure from Ideal Standard quite useful (if you google Ideal Standard Concept you can download a brochure which shows various dimensions of bathrooms, how you can arrange the various components and photos too – just useful as a guideline). Depending on the dimensions, you’ll need to be clever with the fittings / décor and potentially used slightly smaller sink / toilet etc than you would ordinarily.

The only thing I would say is be careful regarding heating. In our last house, we had a HUGE bathroom, free standing bath, big stand alone bath, and it was completely tiled. It was gorgeous (and brilliant to have the space for family bathtime if you have little ones). But it was absolutely freezing. All year round. If I were to have a big bathroom again, I’d have underfloor heating (or equivalent).

I'd definitely go for a separate shower if you have the space. So much nicer. And room for a chair/stool/bench.

Thanks all. I'd discounted a separate shower as it's another thing to have to clean and I find showers in baths more spacious.

Our current bathroom is 2.24x2.11 and I want to make sure I keep the new room in proportion with the rest of the house. So I don't want to make it mahoosive, otherwise the box room will look like that should be the bathroom and the new bathroom should be the bedroom iyswim?

Somewhere for a stool/chair is a good idea. And thanks Mandy for the link to Ideal Standard. There's a planner on the site too.
