Kitchens without wall cabinets

I am designing a kitchen at the moment as part of a large kitchen/dining/family room and finding the decision making really hard.

I am thinking of having no wall cabinets for a more spacious feel(cabinets will go along one 6.5m wall and there will be a separate 2m island) apart from two floor to ceiling at one end (one near wall, adjacent one with double oven). I cant get rid of these as an under-counter oven would be be annoying and it would lose too much cupboard space. This still gives me 17 60cm or 80cm wide cabinets.

I have been playing around with a kitchen design tool and I think that would look nicer than wall cabinets.

Has anyone done this at all? Will I regret not bunging as much storage space as possible in there? Any advice gratefully received.

Can I see a photo of the appliance garage with door open and closed? (Am designing a kitchen)

Ours isn't particularly sophisticated but is very useful. We did it by stacking base units. The bottom section is a base unit. The middle section is a base unit and the top section is a wall unit (which is being wallpapered inside as I type).

Thanks, prepper, that is a cunning plan and no mistake

Its really handy since there is literally no need for anything on the worktops (kettle sits on the indiction hob). It makes the kitchen look much tidier and its a doddle to clean.

The toaster and microwave are also at a good height for the DCs to use.

My kitchen decorating should be finished today. Very excited to see it all completed. The decorator said he has never been asked to wallpaper inside the glass fronted units before but it really does look good.

I really like that floor to ceiling cupboards look. I think it looks a lot better than having a floor bit and a wall bit and nothing in between.

However saying that I have to have my microwave where there is a decent amount of space in front of it, as carrying something hot and having nowhere to put it immediately is no fun.

We have a 34" deep bit of worktop, into an alcove, which is where my microwave is going when the lovely guy has finished building it - plenty of room to put down a plate or sagging takeaway style container.

This is our kitchen this morning! Grin and that is the alcove bit in pink ahem, 'coral flair'.

The small drawer underneath the middle cupboard has a pull out shelf on top of it Sophie. So if I want to take something out of the microwave and its too hot, I can pull out the shelf and put it there.

Oh that is true genius! Kudos Prepper Smile

I can take no credit. I spent literally hours of my life on Houzz.com looking at $100,000 kitchens and working out how I could pinch and adapt the ideas for significantly less than $100,000 Grin

Tell me about it Grin

Wow! I really like that, what are the grey work surfaces?

Marmitelover55 · 16/06/2015 13:10

Hi Hullygully - if you were addressing me then the work surfaces are a granite called Ivory Fantasy Smile

HayFeverHell · 16/06/2015 14:03

Just gorgeous Marmite!

I really like your painting of treses.

Walnutpie · 16/06/2015 14:06

prepper is that an IKEA kitchen?

GooseyLoosey · 16/06/2015 14:09

I recently designed my DMs kitchen. She has 3 built-in floor to ceiling cupboards in an alcove along one wall. They house the washer, fridge-freezer and microwave and there is a big larder cupboard in the middle. There are no wall units at all in the kitchen. It looks great - really spacious and feels like much more of a room to relax in than a functional space for working in.

GooseyLoosey · 16/06/2015 14:11

Sophie - couldn't you build a floor to ceiling cupboard and put the microwave on a shelf where the work surface would have been with nothing else on the shelf? You would still then have room to put stuff beside it.

SophieHatters · 16/06/2015 14:23

Thank you for the suggestion Goosey. It's difficult to tell from the photo but the kitchen is really very small indeed, so if I don't have the worktop there, there won't really be one!

I think it ought to work out Ok. More progress now!

yy marmite, I was. Ta.

prepperpig · 16/06/2015 16:14

Walnut yes its a pimped up Ikea kitchen. We added side panels around each cabinet, moulding around the top and bottom of the cabinets and feet (which you can't see on that photo since they hadn't yet been fitted).
