Plain Walllpaper

Does plain wallpaper in a neutral colour look like unpainted lining paper when on? i was thinking of papering the bedroom instead of painting but need a neutral colour. Any suggestions?

I once had a very lift cream paper that just had a very subtle square pattern when the light caught it. Maybe something like that might work?
