cutting a wooden worktop - how hard it is for diy novice and what tools to use

Just that really. If I get a wooden worktop of standard size, how hard it would be to cut it to desired size both along the length and width. Also how to make its cut edge smooth?

Horrible job and I've done a lot of DIY.

Where are you getting it? B&Q can cut to size if you buy instore

I cut mine roughly and took it in the car to the local timber merchant who neatened it up for me. They won't do sink holes though.

Have resorted to getting a joiner in to do that bit.

You really need a bench saw/router for this. I have done worktops and sinks with a jigsaw but it doesn't cut a straight vertical cut, the blade will veer to an angle.

It's truly hard to get right without a machine.

oh dear. I want to cut a worktop to place on top of white shelving units. I have got all white shelves and I love the look of white+wooden combination. I am thinking if somehow I can get wooden top on them instead of completely replacing them.

Go to B&Q or a local timber yard and ask them to cut you a piece. Measure really well and they will do it to the millimetre normally.

Sounds nice Smile

also if they can supply worktop they may well have offcuts they can sell you cheaply, cut to size, so you don't have to buy a giant 3 metre long piece.

Or try a local kitchen shop, who often have offcuts.

Thanks Pispcina.

A lot of places will cut to size for you.

We bought our kitchen worktops from worktop express and at the same time had a piece cut to form a windowsill. Just gave them the measurements and they cut to size.

We did cut our worktops ourselves as well, but all the cut edges we made are not on view Smile

Straight lines are fine with a hired jigsaw and electric plane to neaten up edges. Do not try cut outs. Was a total nightmare and looks a bit messy round the hob tbh. White and wood is awesome though :)

thanks all for advice. Do worktop express deliver made to measure worktops? What I need are pieces of worktop/wood in size 180x40 and 120x40 to create a look like this.
