Blinds vs net curtains

We have large, south-facing windows in our living room, and consequently it gets too hot. We've had quotes for blinds but I was wondering if net curtains would do the job. Would net curtains keep a room cool, or should I go for blinds?

Are net curtains still legal?
Please don't get them unless you're 95.

nets are disgusting, we have a big bay window facing south, and have blinds, and I just close them and does the trick

To keep out the heat, the blind should really be on the outside, so the awning is a good idea.
