Scaffolds have damaged roof tiles. What do we do?

We are having our house painted next week and had to have scaffolding erected over the single storey side extension as the gable end is too high to reach for painting. The roof of the extension is pitched.

They put it up this morning then left. When I returned from the school run this afternoon, I looked down the side (there is narrow access down the side to get to the back of the house) I noticed some roof tiles on the floor. 2 have been neatly put together and proper up against the wall and one is laying smashed on the floor. These were definitely not there before. The neatness and the fact they are propped up says to me they definitely knew the had come off.

DH has looked out of our landing window onto the roof and says he can't see anything. Problem is the scaffolding is likely to be blocking it anyway and it's a high up windows so he wouldn't have got a great view.

I have phoned the company and told them and I am waiting for them to phone me back.

What do we do about this? I do not want to have to fork out to get something fixed that they damaged. The roof is only 8 years old as it is so years of life left in it. DH thinks they will deny doing it but I don't see how they can.

Hi
Your first recourse is to contact the company, telephone first.
If they do not respond in 5 working days, write them a letter explaining the situation and tell them you expect them to attend, examine and rectify the damage at their cost. Give them 14 days to reply from the date of the letter. As a final line at the bottom of the page say: "I shall seek legal assistance if I do not hear from you satisfactorily within this time".

Your next course of action is to ask a reputable roofing firm to quote to repair the damage and to take the case to the Small Claims service.
I think it can be done online. Read more info here. www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/small-claims-court

Be persistant and they'll sort it out... If you just lay down they'll walk all over you !

Good Luck

Thank you.

I did phone yesterday and the one who actually quoted me (he didn't put the scaffolding up himself) phoned back this morning. The blokes who put it up were back this morning. Apparently they have broken 3 tiles but the 2 neatly at the end were spares (I have never noticed them there before but that doesn't mean they weren't there) and they are now gone so I think they put them back up and the smashed one can be repaired and put back so hopefully all is good.
