Painting over laminate worktop?

Evening all. I had some brilliant advise about tile paint last week (although have since decided to retile)but now I'm wondering about whether anyone had painted worktops? We could replace but have a very small and awkward shaped kitchen so the cutting and fitting will be difficult to do ourselves and don't have the budget for a professional.

Google has shown lots of blogs of people doing it and it seeming to turn out really well, but they're all American or Australian so was wondering if anyone here had done it? ?

yes, I've seen stuff on Apartment Therapy about this. I'm normally a great fan of sloshing paint on everything that doesn't move, but I reckon this one is for the strong of heart!

I'll read your replies with interest...

I've done it & it's OK - but you'll need to use chopping boards in future.

It was a very interim fix on worktops that were already knackered, to be fair, & I just sanded lightly, sloshed with gloss & have re-touched since. It's definitely not a longterm solution, unless you do a far better job than I did!

interesting, so you just used regular paint? I would always use chopping boards anyway so maybe it is a goer. ...

Yeah, just black gloss (it's a v gothic kitchen Grin).

I'm always chipping bits off it & I've re-touched it at least once.

I'm not claiming it's a particularly 'finished' look & I wouldn't try it on a decent kitchen - this one was so horrible - ancient orange pine Farmhouse that had been hacked at by students for several years - that we agreed we couldn't possibly make it worse & would be replacing within a couple of years anyway.
