Moving tips - box labelling?

Planning to move the end of May and want to get a head start. We're packing ourselves but removal company actually moving.
I'm hoping to make a start this weekend. What's the best way of organizing boxes. I was thinking of assigning each room a colour and then each box a number. My dh has just rolled his eyes at this saying the removal guys will think we are idiots BUT he hasn't any alternative suggestions.
Any seasoned movers - what's the best way of doing this?

Assign each room a number, number the boxes accordingly? Remember to stick a piece of paper on each door with the right number on.

Give each box a number & write down, in a book, roughly what is in each box.

And write the numbers on ALL SIDES of the box - useless if you just write the number on the top & the removers stack the boxes up!

I labelled each box with the name of the room and directions if that wasn't clear (eg Master Bed - left from stairs). I printed sheets of labels from my computer. Then I hand wrote another one giving a rough idea of what was in it.

I used large coloured spots on boxes -tops and sides, and put same colour spots on room doors and on a sheet of paper at front door, listing the rooms and their colour. Also put list of contents on the boxes in thick black marker pen.
A separate box with kettle, mugs, teabags/coffee, milk, sugar, bottle of water, biscuits, soap, hand towel, loo roll, bin bags, washing up liquid, kitchen roll and some j cloths and wipes came with us in the car.
Best of luck with your move.

remember you aren't insured for any breakages as the removers didn't pack the stuff. So...

  • look up to how pack china
  • book boxes must be full, which means they mustn't be too big. Removal men are not superhuman, try lifting it yourself.
  • seconded - label items on the sides. I'd stick with the simple colour code. Do list contents but removers are in a hurry so colours are good.
  • get on to freecycle now asking for boxes and packing materials. If you work you should start packing now, it is in no way too soon.
  • label packs of mirrors, picture frames etc etc with lots of 'fragile - glass' notes.

took me two weeks to pack a 3 bed house. most of it spent 5 months in storage and then had another move; but it all survived unbroken, even the mirrors.
