Ceiling lights a must?

Do you think you ought to have a main light in the middle of the ceiling of the living room? Obviously you don't have to, but I can't find any I like for our new living room and think it's mostly because we hardly ever use the central one - tend to just use lamps and things elsewhere.
Will I regret not having one? Could I get rid of the existing fitting and fit a decorative ceiling rose instead?
Or maybe there are some fabulous lights out there that I am missing.
Interested in what others have in their houses.

Our last house had no ceiling or wall lights in the livingroom - but did have light switches! We didn't notice until after we moved in and had to go out and buy a couple of standard lamps and some table lamps. We were in that house for 15 years and it honestly never bothered us. We had the standard lamps on timer so they would come on in the evening so no issue really.

We looked round a house once that had no ceiling lights; there were little two-pinned sockets around the room and they were controlled by the light switch.

Unfortunately, the sellers had taken all the lights and their little plugs with them. There were other things wrong with the house, like it was too expensive and the garden very small, so we didn't buy it.
