Buying a property: Independent Mortgage Advisor

Hello. We are currently looking to start the process of searching for & buying a property. A couple of months ago we had met with two mortgage advisors, just to get an idea of the size of mortgage we can get and start things going, and really got along well with one of the advisors (he was patient, explained everything really clearly and we felt he got us, which as two foreigners who have recently moved here it is really important, as the other just assumed we knew things, and did not take time to explain things). Now we are in the process of starting the process of seriously looking and as we had some changes in jobs etc, we tried to contact the mortgage advisor. However, we were informed that he moved on from the original company/estate agency he worked with. We found him on Linkedin, and contacted him, and he advised that he is now an independent mortgage advisor.

Has anyone ever had experience of using an independent mortgage advisor? Any tips or suggestions? Would we need to pay him for all appointments? Anything we should look out for?

We would be very grateful for any replies.
