sound block boards for a terrace house with thin walls!

Stearinlys · 24/03/2015 13:38

Has anybody had these fitted? I'm thinking of rock wool under the floor boards too.

I can hear the very fat lady next door roll over in bed. I am not kidding. My daughter has to listen to the fat lady's coughing sister coughing all night. We are driven mad. My son is ok in his box room as that borders the stairs of the house on the other side.

Any tips? any pitfalls!?

I can't wait to get it done.

We paid £2000 to have the full internal shared walls in a semi soundproofed.

Prior to that we could hear everything down to them flicking a light switch on.

Stearinlys · 24/03/2015 17:22

wow. Thanks for that. Our dividing walls sound equalling thin. It is ridiculous how houses could have been built like this.

£2000 sounds a little more than I was counting on. Are you in London?
you're happy you had it done anyway?

the annoying thing is that the neighbours benefit from your spend!

No, I'm in the northwest.

We used a proper soundproofing company who had done another house on the estate.

No advice, but I feel for you OP. I'm in the same boat, I can hear everything - one neighbour more so than the other but still much more than I would like!

My rooms are small enough so really couldn't lose too much.

Stearinlys · 24/03/2015 20:32

Same here. 330cm by 300. IF that. Maybe not quite.

Thanks gemma, I will try to get a quote from a soundproofing company.

ps, you got just the bedrooms done?

when I am in my sitting room I can also hear their tv and their yappy little dog but I think it's worse to be able to hear neighbours when you're lying in bed.

We have similar issues in a 1930s semi. As I type this I can hear the neighbours television OVER my own. They are a couple in their late 60s and a little hard of hearing. It's much worse in our bedroom - it's like they are in our room with their sodding TV on. We only moved in summer last yr, one of my first questions to the previous owners was do you hear next door? I was told not at all. Like hell you don't! We are hoping to soundproof but the problem is the party walls have chimney breasts with working fires so I'm not sure what effect can be achieved from just doing the alcoves - I really feel your pain as I hate it, makes me feel like my house is being invaded by them Sad

Baalamooree · 24/03/2015 20:55

We have chimney breasts too. No idea if it's worth just doing the alcoves and we are solid wall not cavity.

Anyone had this work on a Victorian terrace? Does it work and how much space did you lose?

AnnieMoor · 24/03/2015 21:02

I am not sure what relevance your neighbour's size has on your sound-proofing issue.

Make sure you use a soundproofing expert and not someone that will just insulate.

Stearinlys · 24/03/2015 21:31

The relevance of her size is that it makes a lot of noise when she rolls over in her ancient bed, which would perhaps make less noise if she were lighter. But she's not. Some nights I am woken up, properly woken up - from being asleep when she rolls over.

No, not just the bedroom, we got the downstairs hall wall and lounge wall and upstairs two bedroom walls that all adjoined next door.

In the main bedroom, after the wall was done we moved the wardrobes in front of the wall and our bed to the other side of the room.

Stearinlys · 26/03/2015 16:17

wow, I'm so envious!

Did your neighbour notice that they could hear less!? so annoying that if you fnd it they benefit eqaully! but i could live with that.

They never heard us anyway - we were the ones living next door to a herd of elephants.

Wine

Enjoy the peace!
